Xiao Kou excavations 2019
Xiao Kou lies many metres higher than Ma Feng and once through its very tiny entrance (Xiao Kou means small entrance) the cave reveals a thick flowstone with many, many fossils embedded below. The fossils are wedged inside a river deposit called a conglomerate and may have been deposited inside the cave when the river was at the same height as the cave entrance (before incising down into the river valley to its current elevation). Excavations at this site are very preliminary and Xiao Kou has only just started to reveal its secrets......watch this space!
